Available Workshops

General Story Workshop
This is a general workshop that covers many of the topics covered in the more specific workshops, but in less detail, and with less time for student exercises. It is more of an instructional workshop. Topics covered are Ideas, Planning, Outlining and Characters, plus Conflict and the Writing Framework (time permitting).

Ideas, Planning and Outlining
In this workshop I cover the process of coming up with an idea for a story, then taking that idea and planning a story. We look at the structure of a story and how to write a brief outline, like a road map to ensure that the writing stays on track.

Characters and Conflict
This workshop shows how to create interesting, engaging characters and how to put them into conflict with each other, the world around them, and even themselves.

The Writing Framework
This workshop focuses on the process of creative writing, breaking it down into its different elements and showing how to create good descriptive scenes and powerful writing.

Keeping the Reader Hooked
This worshop demonstrates and explains the techniques that authors use to create suspense and tension. How to keep those pages turning long after bedtime!

Historical Fiction
I have written a number of historical novels, covering topics such as the First and Second World Wars, and the Napoleonic Wars, in this workshop I show how important research is when writing historical fiction and how to weave the background information into a story without making it obvious.

Book Trailers
Book trailers are a fun way to get students engaged with reading. They have to read and understand a book in order to make a short video presentation for other students about that book. This workshop covers how to plan and write a trailer, and the technology involved.

StorySports
StorySports puts the fun back into writing. Teams compete against each other in a series of writing challenges that teach students important writing skills, while they are having fun! It's a little like theatre sports, except that the emphasis is on writing skills. Students compete in quick-fire games that test their creativity, imagination, and storywriting skills to win prizes.

Teaching Writing to Kids
This is a workshop for teachers, covering the information and techniques that I have used successfully around the world to achieve extraordinary results teaching writing to young people.
