This is the page for trivia and other stuff about Super Freak. Enjoy! |

The Wasp Attack
This is based on a true event that happened when I was at Intermediate School. The little girl was saved by two of my friends, Kevin E and Michael M. You might notice that the book is dedicated to them. They were really brave. I wasn't. I have never forgotten the incident. |

Well they rang the bell...
This line, in the GWF fight scene, is actually a quote from a song. The song is called "The ballad of the Blue Cyclone" by Ray Stevens. It is about wrestling and it is really funny. You can find the full lyrics here: |

Glenfield School
The school in the book is called "Glenfield School". It is supposed to be Glenfield College, but anyone who went to Northcote College (where I went to school) will notice that most of the descriptions of the school are actually of Northcote! |

The Cover Photograph
This is not a real photograph. It is a composite of a number of photos and the lightning was added electronically. Click on the photo to see a large version. My brother Graeme took all the photos and put it all together. He is really talented at this kind of thing. There is a short presentation on how the cover was created here. |

Laura
Laura (my daughter) wrote her lovely Haiku as part of a class assignment. I needed some for my book so I borrowed hers (without telling her). Laura was really surprised (and delighted) to see them used in Super Freak! |

Lightning and Power Pylons
Lightning can and does strike power pylons, as they are often the highest thing around. Like in this real photo (click on it to make it bigger).

But I took some liberties with the truth, when I wrote the scene where the boys climb a pylon in the thunderstorm. Pylons are grounded, so there would be little danger to the boys from the lightning, even if it struck the pylon. The dangerous thing about power pylons is the high voltage electricity lines they carry. Please don't ever climb a power pylon, they are very, very dangerous places!
And don't ever go anywhere near a pylon in a thunderstorm. If you were near one and it got hit by lightning, the voltage could still kill or injure you, just by standing too near! |

Text Bullying
When I first wrote Super Freak, I had never heard of 'Text Bullying'. That is why nobody in Super Freak calls it that. Nowadays it is talked about on posters, leaflets, and even on the news.
I was worried for a while that I might have invented it!
Bullying is a stupid thing to do, and text bullying is just as bad. Promise me that you won't ever do anything like that.
Please! |

Links to My Other Books
There are a long of links between Henry and the Flea, and The Real Thing and Super Freak.
One is when Jacob and Ben watch Daniel's first ever Rugby League game on the television. See if you can find that scene in Henry and the Flea. Another is that you find out how Jenny and Phil got together.
But there are plenty more. See if you can find them all! |

Acting in Commercials
Jacob's dad is an actor in TV commercials. I know what this is like because I did it myself for a few years. You might have spotted me once or twice in Shortland Street, and I once played a dancing Santa in a Kachingo commercial! |
